This research work deals with the investigation of how far curriculum objectives of sports and physical education are applied and meet psychological needs (self-confidence, stress lessening, violent expressions lessening) of third year secondary school pupils in three regions of the Algerian western south (Naama, Bechar, Adrar).
The study sample consists of 3000 randomly chosen pupils who are organized in sets of 1000 pupils from each region, along with 120 sports and physical education teachers.
This work has adopted a descriptive methodology using questionnaire forms to collect data which have revealed the following:
- Most sports and physical education teachers in secondary schools are not interested in dealing with psychological aspects of their pupils.
- Most of these teachers address only physical issues.
- Most of these teachers are not aware of the objectives of sports and physical education curricula.
- They do not incorporate games and exercises that develop psychological needs during sports and physical courses.
- Most of these teachers in the Algerian western south reduce courses time periods from 02 hours per course to 01 hour, especially in the
beginning of the school year and in its end because of high temperatures during these periods. In the light of what has been stated, we suggest that sports and physical
curricula should be applied correctly to enable pupils satisfy theirpsychological needs, namely:self-confidence, stress lessening, and violent expressions lessening
