This study aims to analyze the impact of social media platforms on shaping political public opinion in Algeria, with a particular focus on their role during major political events such as the 2019 Hirak Movement and presidential elections. The research adopts a descriptive–analytical approach that combines theoretical and empirical perspectives through the analysis of digital interactions and selected politically active online platforms.
Findings reveal that social media has become a central actor in producing political discourse and influencing collective perception. It provides an alternative public sphere characterized by interactivity and rapid information circulation, thereby reshaping the relationship between citizens and political institutions. However, the study also highlights a duality of influence: while social media enhances political participation and awareness, it simultaneously facilitates misinformation, polarization, and algorithmic manipulation.
The study concludes by emphasizing the need to strengthen digital media literacy, encourage quantitative and qualitative research on Algerian users’ online behavior, and establish balanced digital governance policies that safeguard both freedom of expression and social responsibility.
