The Effectiveness of Social Media in Raising Awareness about the Importance of Protecting Wildlife in Algeria a Study From the Perspective of a Sample of Followers of Specialized Algerian Facebook Pages

Abstract

This research paper highlights the experience of using social media platforms to raise awareness about the importance of preserving wildlife in Algeria. It seeks to draw attention to the positive roles these platforms can play in modifying the environmental behavior of their users and promoting an eco-friendly culture based on respect for natural components ,The study was conducted on a sample of 131 respondents who follow wildlife protection pages on Facebook in Algeria.

 The findings confirmed that the growing number of social media users provides a significant opportunity to increase public awareness about biodiversity conservation, particularly concerning endangered species. The respondents unanimously agreed that these pages offer high-quality content, including texts, images, and videos, which enhance public engagement and acceptance of environmental messages. Moreover, these platforms provide a digital space for associations, environmental activists, wildlife documentation enthusiasts, nature explorers, researchers, and followers to exchange information and stimulate discussions on various environmental issues. These include improving wildlife conservation efforts and raising public awareness about the threats facing endangered species in Algeria Such as random and unjust hunting. Such efforts can contribute to promoting the model of a "digital citizen" with an environmental consciousness that takes into account the adverse effects of spreading sensitive or misleading information about wildlife such as promoting irresponsible tourism or illegal activities that harm the environment.
