Digital media falsification and its repercussions on Algerian social security: a survey of a sample of Facebook users

Abstract

Our research explores the impact of digital media falsification on societal security in Algeria, drawing on the perspectives of the Copenhagen School of security studies. The study presents media falsification as a form of digital threat, analyzing how it manifests across virtual spaces and how it influences Algeria’s societal stability, particularly in political and economic dimensions. It also investigates strategies to address this issue. A quantitative methodology was employed, using a survey-based approach and an online questionnaire as the main data collection tool. The study reached a set of results, the most important of which are: According to the Copenhagen School’s proposals, media falsification is considered an immaterial security threat produced by digital spaces that affects Algerian societal security by spreading a culture of fear and instability through the securitization of issues and their digital ideologization, especially in the political and economic aspects
