Abstract

This research addresses the structural transformations that have affected the concept of citizenship, by analyzing the process of transition from traditional frameworks grounded in geographical determinants and nationalism sovereignty to the horizons of digital citizenship. This vision came in the context of an attempt to comprehend the impacts generated by the informatics revolution and the dimensions produced by the technological revolution.

Notably, citizenship is no longer confined to a static legal status that links the individual to the state within a physical spatial domain; rather, it has evolved into a dynamic practice whose features develop within digital and virtual spaces that transcend national borders. This transformation has led to the reconfiguration and engineering the concept of citizenship into digital citizenship, characterized by flexibility and the ability to accommodate the changing roles of the “digital actor,” as well as by the formulation of rights, duties, and civic responsibilities system in accordance with technical and interactive logic.

This digital transition has not been free of structural problems and critical challenges, which appear clearly in the digital divide problem, as well as threats to privacy, data confidentiality, and data security, within an efficient and accessible digital environment marked by fluidity and continuous change
