This study analyses the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs/SMIs) in the development of the tourism sector in Algeria, with the objective of promoting economic diversification. The research highlights the growing contribution of SMEs to the revitalization of the Algerian tourism through job creation, the expansion of accommodation capacity, and territorial enhancement.
The results show an increase of more than 50% in the number of tourist establishments, confirming the structural role of SMEs within the national economic fabric, even though the share of tourism in GDP remains limited and vulnerable to exogenous shocks. Despite persistent challenges related to financing, infrastructure, training, and digitalization, these local enterprises are emerging as key actors in building a sustainable tourism model.
